Push Notifications: When do you turn it off?

“Technology was supposed to make life easier and give us more time.” Technology can trap us in a world of push-notifications. A Person of Influence must manage time and information. How do you manage constant information coming at you from all angles and keep yourself from going insane? How can you make time for the truly important people in your life?

When I first started in politics as a staffer, the device of choice was called a Blackberry. It was a revolutionary device with a keyboard. People became as addicted to them as they are to their smartphones today. You could not put the thing down. Everyone was constantly typing and sharing events of the day.

My father dealt with challenging heart issues. When I was eight years old he flat-lined and was eventually revived. He had an aortic heart transplant followed by surgery to implant a pacemaker and ultimately a defibrillator. I made it a point to go to my local “Blockbuster Video” store and rent a movie to watch with him every Saturday night.

I spent a lot of time with my father. Some of my friends said “I was going to miss  the explosion of the Miami nightlife back in the 80’s.” Do not feel sorry for me. I still lived the experience on Fridays.

At first, I found myself on my Blackberry and missed key movie scenes. More importantly, I missed his laughter. He loved comedies. One day I just turned my Blackberry off before a movie and never looked back. The messages would still be there on Sunday. I enjoyed every second with him until his death two weeks before I graduated from Law School. I treasure those moments with my dad.

Spend time with those you love. I use the following formula: P = PP (Process = Prioritizing People)

Process

Develop a process which focuses on what you need to know. Build a credible network. Target a few blogs and social media outlets. Rely on your network to keep you informed and help you achieve desired outcomes. Execute a consistent regimen to stay informed.

Prioritize

Make a list of the people in your life you should be spending quality time with. Set up time with them on your calendar. Go from, “Maybe I should spend more time with them,” to “I am going to spend more time with them.”

People

Turn-off your technology when spending time with priority people in your life. Look at them in your discussions, not your technology. Live your emotions directly with them, not through a device.

I look back at my memories and they always make me smile. I couldn't imagine not spending precious moments with friends and family. I know many who have a fantastic relationship with their smartphone and no one else. Do not become that someone. Your phone will not hold your hand on your deathbed.
